Based in our little barn at the foot of the Sugar Loaf mountain in the Brecon Beacons of Wales, The Sugar Loaf Soap Company has a very simple mission. We aim to provide natural, handmade soap produced from high quality, ethically sourced raw materials – kind on your skin and the environment.
Why opt for handmade?
First and foremost handmade soaps are not subject to the same refinement that we see in commercially manufactured products. Commercial soaps are often just a by-product, made primarily to extract the glycerine produced by the manufacturing process and sell it on separately at many times the price of the soap. Glycerine is a natural humectant, drawing moisture to the skin and holding it there. If you’ve used commercially manufactured soap you will know that it can leave your skin feeling very dry and tight, this is because that precious glycerine has been stripped away. Our soaps are made simply, from the finest ingredients, and they retain their glycerine content. If you’ve never tried handmade soap before, you are in for a treat.
Commercially manufactured soaps also tend to be made from ingredients that have been deodorised and decolourised. This processing allows the products to be subjected to the excessive temperatures and high pressures that they might encounter when being shipped around the world or left on mass storage sites. This refinement of the ingredients destroys any of the natural properties of the oils. Then, in order to bring colour and odour back to the soap, synthetic fragrances, colourants, preservatives and foaming agents are added to the product – these can be irritating to the skin and can result in allergies or increased sensitivity. We believe that now more than ever, the consumer – you and I – want to know who made the product that we are buying, what was used and where it came from – it’s only by adopting this attitude that we can push for more sustainable and more ethical businesses.
